I woke up yesterday to a string of Facebook and Twitter comments both pretty evenly split for and against Gina Rinehart – the comments of course were based around articles written in the Herald, News.com etc about how Mining Monster Gina was telling all the jealous hard working Aussie’s to stop drinking, smoking and socialising and work harder if they wanted to make more money. She was also slammed for saying in the article the minimum wage should be lowered – another example of the rich getting richer and the poor suffering under the iron throne this Western Beast Sits on!
Over the weekend we organised a dress-up party with the theme ‘Rockstars’ and everyone got right into it. It seems that people love dressing up and it got me thinking about marketing and business in general and how some people seem to be playing the ‘dress up’ game a lot. Must be pretty exhausting to try and be something or somebody they are not.
When you build an empire, there will be things that happen within it that happen without you being in the room – sales get made, rent comes in, fees are paid, royalties are collected – however it isn‘t “passive”. You can never turn your back on your empire, it will always be something that you are building and protecting.
‘You don’t even care do you?’ said an athlete after I busily dismissed his concerns prior to a session. He had said it with a smile in the hopes of winding me up but it was not the first time I had heard such a comment. Recently other athletes had joked with me in the same way. At that moment I realised there must be some truth to this statement. I was devastated.
Being successful in business requires good leadership skills. One of the main characteristics of a good leader is aggressiveness. Aggressive leaders know how to get things done in a productive and efficient way. A good leader is not only aggressive. Being competent is equally as important as being aggressive.
Are you in business to make money, to have fun, or to inflate your ego? If it’s the latter, then make an appointment to see a psychologist before your business fails, and most likely your ego with it. Sure. Once you have a good business I’m not denying that it IS something to be proud of, however if this is a big part of the reason that you starting a business in the first place, then you are getting into it for the wrong reasons.
When I was in primary school, I was bullied relentlessly. Between the ages of 6 and 8, I was beaten up pretty much every day by boys in my class while they taunted me about being fat and ugly. My parents advice was to ignore it – to turn the other cheek. I love my parents and I know they were doing their best to help – but they were wrong. Some 25 years later, you would think life would be well past dealing with 5 year old bullies calling you fat. Except that it’s not. I had a run-in yesterday with a bully who hasn’t grown up – and it presented some interesting business points … about why turning the other cheek is almost ALWAYS a bad idea. So I wrote you a post about it.
Personally, I am no different to most people when it comes to willpower and nutrition either. I can guarantee you that my sweet tooth is just as ‘sweet’ as the guy sitting next to me at the bus stop who weighs 130kg. I can eat a bag full of sweets in no time. I love them, however I am at time of writing 8% bodyfat. How is it possible that I have the same or less willpower when it comes to sweets as someone who is overweight but my physical form is so different? The answer is that I do not rely on willpower to maintain my physical form. I rely on HABIT!

And unlike other forms of marketing and advertising, it’s low-cost, greatly leveling the playing field for small-to- medium businesses.
There is a common perception that it is impossible to talk to the most successful amongst us. This is not true. But you can’t be blamed for thinking that way, it’s only natural. I mean why on earth would someone that awesome be willing to talk to a person who hasn’t yet begun to reach a similar peak?
So I have done it – I am walking the plank and it’s a bloody scary thing to really get your head around. At the end of the day it’s a sink or swim situation – what is the worst thing that can happen? For me it would be looking back in 10 years time and thinking I wonder if I had taken that leap of faith back then if things would be different today? At least if I fail – I get to do it now and learn from it.
Research has confirmed that when people who are perceived as ‘experts’ offer advice and information to others, these people actually lose the capacity to process information and make decisions for themselves. The most successful and highest performing athletes I have worked with are those who consider themselves as the experts of their own career and take control and responsibility accordingly.
