Workible partners with recruitment agency Chandler Macleod to launch new initiative to tackle unemployment

Job platform Workible has today announced a new partnership with recruitment agency Chandler Macleod through which it will launch a new initiative called The Jobs Agenda. The initiative will look to tackle the levels of unemployment in Australia and help people overcome the challenges of getting a job in the 21st century.

The Jobs Agenda will look to form a collaborative cross-sector partnership with a range of industry sectors to explore and activate solutions to help people upskill for jobs that not only already exist, but for jobs that will exist in the future. To do so, last week Workible brought together 46 leaders from government, industry, education and business to discuss the challenges Australia is facing as we move into the digital age.

With a predicted five million jobs to be lost to technology in the coming decade, cofounder of Workible Fiona Anson believes that an initiative like The Jobs Agenda can explore the real issues people face in securing employment. In speaking and collaborating with various industry sectors Anson hopes to bring to light effective solutions for both unemployment and skill shortage.

Anson said that while unemployment sits at approximately 5.7 percent nationally, unemployment in regional areas, for younger people, mature age workers, those with disabilities and Indigenous Australians can be as high as 30 percent. Also citing under-employment as a growing issue, Anson highlighted that one in eight Australians are currently under-employed and wanted or needed more work to make ends meet.

The Jobs Agenda will be an ongoing national initiative that brings together individuals, organisations and government bodies that can effect change.

Tania Sinibaldi, COO of Chandler Macleod’s Staffing Services said that both Chandler Macleod and Workible are “passionate advocates for getting people into jobs regardless of their age, race, ability, location and gender.”

“Collectively we need to work together as employers, educators, influencers and industry leaders to establish a joint approach to creating jobs. We should be talking more about supply and demand, identifying skill sets required for future jobs and ensuring relevant training and education is available to all,” she said.

In looking at the impact of digital disruption on current jobs, Salesforce has today released new research on how it will drive over 75,000 new direct and indirect jobs by 2020, adding $6.9 billion into Australia’s GDP.

Robert Wickham, regional vice president in innovation and digital transformation at Salesforce APAC believes that the cloud is enabling the greatest pace of business transformation the world has ever seen.

“Progressive Australian businesses are using cloud technology to pivot to the customer; they are collectively benefiting from the ongoing innovation that cloud delivers,” he said.

One of the main challenges that Australia looks to face in the coming years is a disparity between skills and jobs. While there has been a large focus on supporting STEM education in schools through programs like Code Club Australia, Code the Future and Australia 2020, the existing industries today are concerned that already supply doesn’t meet demand.

Workible’s workforce analytics are derived from the Workible Network, the largest connected network of job sites in Australia and all publicly available job data. This data is crucial to assessing where the gaps lie in skill shortage and will help both Workible and Chandler Macleod develop creative solutions to assist entry into the workforce.

Data from Workible’s National Workforce Indicators Report highlights that tertiary education and related experiences like work placement help students obtain a job four times faster than those that have no outside study experiences. This highlights the need for real-world experiences that can be integrated into existing learning frameworks and Anson believes that this is just one area that can be improved upon.

Workible has been a strong voice for creating jobs not only for people in metro cities, but for those in regional and rural communities around the country. In May this year Workible partnered with WiC Group to expand its job reach to regional centres in Australia.

“Regional Australia has certainly drawn the short straw when it comes to being looked after by job providers,” said Tim O’Brien, WiC Group founder.

The growth of Workible as a job tech provider has seen the company expand its software all over Australia to become the largest connected network of job sites in the country.
