[VIDEO] Startup Daily Sessions: Ash Maurya, creator of Lean Canvas

There are a couple of central theories or methodologies that startups around the world hold up if not as gospel, as core textbook ideas that they follow on their path from day one of developing a business through to growth. One such core textbook idea is that of the lean canvas, created by US entrepreneur Ash Maurya.

First shared by Maurya in 2009, lean canvas is an adaptation of the original business model canvas by Alex Osterwalkder. It looks to help startups create an actionable and entrepreneur-focused business plan by focusing on problems, solutions, key metrics, and competitive advantages.

Maurya, also the author of Running Lean and Scaling Lean, was recently in Australia thanks to corporate accelerator Slingshot, which brought him out to teach a series of workshops for Australian corporates and entrepreneurs, teaching them how to rapidly build global business through innovation techniques.

He also spoke at the University of Newcastle as part of its intensive Innovation, Startups, and Entrepreneurship course, among the only university courses in Australia where students are taught solely by experienced entrepreneurs, VCs, business strategists, and corporate leaders from both Australia and overseas. The course, created by Slingshot, features the likes of Airtasker CEO Tim Fung, managing director of Pandora, Jane Huxley, Canva cofounder Cliff Obrecht, and others.

We got the chance to have a chat to Maurya about his trip and the Australian startup landscape:

Maurya is coming back to Australia for more workshops next week.
