Is this the sleekest wallet ever?
Wallet designs have undergone some drastic changes over the past few decades. In fact, back in the good ol’ days, some people used bumbags – remember those hideous creatures? Although slimline wallets aren’t new, we still manage to stash them with cards, cash and receipts until they’re no longer slim – and usually on the verge of exploding. Melbourne-based innovators at Liquid have not only found a way to keep things truly compact, but have designed a wallet that carries keys and protects users from electronic skimming.
The Liquid Wallet is a low-profile minimalist wallet made from hard anodised 6061 grade aluminium – making it scratch-resistant. It measures 9.4 x 5.95 x 1.4 cm and weighs a meagre 92 grams when empty. The three best features of the wallet, however, is its adjustable screws that allow the user to carry two standard size keys; a durable elastic strap that keeps cards and cash in place; and its casing, which shields cards and personal information from RFID scanning devices.
Obviously, the design is a little too slimline for wallet hoarders – and probably women too. (The chaos that inhabits our handbags and wallets is an age-old mystery). But for those looking to make a change, the Liquid Wallet forces you to carry only what you need on a daily basis.
The first prototype was developed by a team of five entrepreneurs at the 2013 Hackagong event. The idea was slowly developed over a six month period of creation, revision, and testing into what is now known as the Liquid Wallet. Peter Mai, Co-Founder of Liquid, admits that they started out with “an ugly 3D prototype stuck together with blu-tack and rubber bands”, but the concept received plenty of positive feedback, and they’re now working with local manufacturers to bring the Liquid Wallet into mass production.
The Liquid team are seeking to raise a total of $8,000 on crowdfunding platform Kickstarter to commercialise their product. They’re currently sitting at over $6,600, with 29 days to go. Those who back the Liquid Wallet will get their hands on the first wallet at a discounted price (AUD$41) before they go on to retail for $69.
In a hilariously hyperbolic paragraph on the campaign page, the Liquid team pretty much sum up the greatest appeal of the wallet:
Think of it like this: The keys and the wallet have, for so many decades, existed as essential components to our day, but still remained inexplicably distant from one another. It’s the true tragedy of our modern day; star crossed lovers with uncrossing paths – were they destined to be relegated to separate pockets for eternity? Would the wallet rest easily on your bedside table night after night while the keys slipped silently and helplessly under a couch cushion, destined to send you into a mid-morning panic as you tried to get out the door the next day? A tragedy indeed, we thought.
