Startup TicketWombat.com turns event promotion businesses upside-down

After 12 months of extensive trials, Ticketwombat.com is ready to shake up the market with their brand new spin on event promotion and ticketing.

Unlike other websites, Ticketwombat.com all about giving away free double-passes to a multitude of ticketed events and attractions in Sydney – including live music, festivals and outdoor films.

Not only can users enter an unlimited number of draws free of charge, but they also see how many entrants are in the draw – for a better estimation of their chances of winning.

While Ticketwombat.com is a freemium model, users can get additional value by upgrading to become a City Explorer for $4.90 a month. This provides the opportunity to receive two free tickets (Quick Tix) or win last minute tickets to exclusive events.

After Co-Founders Helmut Lottenburger and Philippa Bird conceived of the idea, they outsourced all programming to India using a local Sydney company.

“The website was created “from scratch” using PHP and has a fairly complex backend for managing draws, events and automated notifications,” says Lottenburger.

Their key point-of-difference is they charge the end-user, rather than event organisers for promotion.

Lottenburger stresses that they “provide a service and don’t tell tickets”.

“Ultimately, we want to establish Ticket Wombat as the number one platform for serious event promotion through giveaways,” says Lottenburger.

“For event organisers, these giveaways can be used to fill empty seats, up-sell tickets or make money with catering and program sales.”

The co-founders also want the site to inspire Sydneysiders to break out of their social routines and pursue new cultural experiences.

“Our mission is to get citizens in touch with new venues, events and attractions. We offer a refreshing new experience when it comes to ticket draws and customer service,” said Helmut

Philippa Bird, owner of WhatsOnSydney.com, now in its 10th year, adds “Times are tough and Ticketwombat.com gives everyone the opportunity to not only see what’s going on in Sydney but also gives a much needed boost to the entertainment industry.”

“What’s really exciting is that you can find yourself entering and winning tickets to events you wouldn’t usually attend. Then, before you know it, the live music buff is attending art shows.”
