BigCommerce announce $40 million Series C funding round
E-Commerce platform BigCommerce have announced that they have just closed a $40 million dollar funding round from US venture fund Revolution Growth. The cash injection will be used to upgrade areas of their technology and increase their hiring in Sydney and Austin, Texas they told Business Insider yesterday.
Revolution Growth is the firm founded by former AOL CEO Steve Case. As part of the funding, Case will join the Bigcommerce board. This brings the company’s total funding to $75 million to date.
Founded in 2009 by Eddie Machaalani and Mitchell Harper the platform allows users to build and manage their websites, currently there are over 36,000 on the platform.
When we last spoke to Harper he revealed back then that Big Commerce would be undergoing an overhaul to “consumerize” business software. That redesign included a new web site, app store and a fresh new look for the product with simpler design features. The brand overhaul also included a new company logo and tagline, ‘Sell More’. The new core message defines what Bigcommerce is all about – helping small and medium-sized businesses in Australia sell more and take advantage of the boom in e-commerce.
This has been executed and looks fantastic.
Although 65% of Big Commerce clients actually sit in North America, the pair have insured that the business maintains a permanent foothold in Australia and a presence throughout the Australian startup community, this includes sponsoring events at a grass roots level such as the code hire cup held at Fishburners recently, where the top three winners received internships with the Big Commerce engineering team.
