Facebook Acquires Social Discovery App Glancee

If you followed any of the threads and commentary from SXSW this year, you would know that social discovery app Glancee was right up there with Highlight as being one of the rising stars of Silicon Valley. Seems that Facebook have noticed this as well, after closing a deal on Sunday [Australian Time] to purchase them for an undisclosed amount.

“We are thrilled to confirm that Facebook has acquired Glancee. The acquisition closed today. We can’t wait for co-founders Andrea, Alberto, and Gabriel to join the Facebook team to work on products that help people discover new places and share them with friends,” Facebook representatives said via statement.

However one of the things that we have noticed is that Glancee has gone missing off both the iOS and Android app stores? Perhaps a temporary thing until it is relaunched under the Facebook brand? Some of the benefits of Glancee – compared to its larger competitor Highlight – include the fact that the app’s cross-platform (Highlight is iOS exclusive). And Glancee doesn’t show the exact location of nearby users  [Highlight does if you’re actually looking for people to chat with in a real-world environment] but for people who don’t want to feel as if they’re being stalked through a social application, Glancee is a much better fit.

Glancee also made an announcement following the acquisition:

“We started Glancee in 2010 with the goal of bringing together the best of your physical and digital worlds. We wanted to make it easy to discover the hidden connections around you, and to meet interesting people. Since then Glancee has connected thousands of people, empowering serendipity and pioneering social discovery.

We are therefore very excited to announce that Facebook has acquired Glancee and that we have joined the team in Menlo Park to build great products for over 900 million Facebook users. We’ve had such a blast connecting people through Glancee, and we truly thank our users for being a part of the Glancee community”.

So the question is with Facebook acquiring mobile applications thick and fast as the move towards their pending IPO having purchased Instagram, TagTile and Glancee all in just a 4 week period – what will be next on the agenda? We have our opinions around Viddy and are keeping tabs on the story as it unfolds over in LA very closely – but others we are also keeping an eye on include Australian App Roamz and it’s US based competitor Banjo.

One thing is for sure, this is not the last purchase and the next one is just around the corner.
