In the latest issue of Inside History magazine, dress historian and image specialist Jayne Shrimpton reveals the secrets to dating old photographs. Her tips make fascinating reading.

Tracing the history of a house is of huge interest at the moment, as many Aussies and Kiwis are keen to discover what stories of the past their homes can reveal. We take a wonderful tour of a street in Sydney’s eastern suburbs in the early 20th century, that just happens to be the same street Tilly Devine resided in for the most part of her life. See what it was like to live in the notorious gangster’s neighbourhood.

From the first complete census in 1828 in Australia, to the first national collection of data in 1911 and the collections since then, censuses form the backbone of every genealogist’s research. In August, Australia’s 16th national census takes place and they look at how you can help the historians of the future with their research, too.
