$1000 investment to a $3.5 million Company!

From humble beginnings just 4 years ago is now a multi million dollar global company with clients and licensees Australia wide, over 2000 unique visitors daily to the website and a database of over 40000 parents.

The founder of BYOkids is Leah Squire.  Leah and her husband are frequent enthusiastic travelers.  They resided in a 1962 Bedford bus while working in the tourism and hospitality industries in beautiful locations such as Ayers Rock, Port Douglas, Fraser Island, Noosa and more. When they had their two boys they were determined to keep their passion for travel alive.  They journeyed around Australia, NZ, Asia and the South Pacific.  As they tried to continue their gypsy like travel habits they encountered some issues that weren’t being addressed. They struggled to find any advice or information on traveling with kids. They wanted to read articles and tips that were relevant to them, but none seemed to exist.

Leah started in 2006 the website has over 1000 pages of travel information for families and gained a loyal following very quickly. Leah quickly realized that she could help rid families of “the bad holiday experience”.  “It was very exciting for me, my dream was eventuating, it was decided immediately that BYOkids should become our business, our life,” Leah said.

BYOkids became a licensed travel agent and started assisting readers with their travel plans. Being a brand new concept and having only $1000 to build her business, Leah looked towards e-newsletters, search engine optimization, affiliate marketing and social media to gain exposure on a small budget. It worked. The site evolved from a travel blog to a valuable 1000 page resource that turned over $3.5 million its first year.  With the enquiries flooding in Leah decided to license the BYOkids brand in 2009 and they now have licensees Australia wide. It goes to show with perseverance and a passion you can start your own successful business.

Leah is also the author of “Marketing with No Money ….how to get your business the attention it deserves” a book she wrote in 2010 to help small business owners get their business not just surviving but thriving on a shoe string budget.
